Winter Olympic Training and Performance

Watching the Winter Olympics

Watching the Winter Olympics provides a completely different perspective on fitness. It's not only about working out, but it is about following the same routine over and over, being the greatest in your country, training consistenly, eating properly, having a strict sleep schedule, etc. while most of the time without even knowing how you will perform compared to other teams. When I watch alpine skiers race down the mountain or figure skaters perform technical routines, it is clear to me how much preparation goes into every movement. The organization, the timing and the competition make it VERY exciting to watch.

What caught my eye is the ability of athletes to be very calm and controlled when under so much pressure. That is the kind of confidence that only comes with consistent training and repetition. Behind every Olympic athlete are many hours of perfection, and when millions of people are watching you, cameras are flying around, people are cheering for your opponents teams, I can't imagine how that pressure feels. It really shows how strong they have to be mentally, not just physically, to stay focused in those moments. Being able to block out distractions and perform at your absolute best under that kind of spotlight is something most people will never experience.
